One thing about reviews on this site, please don't put any spoilers into the review.
Magicians…. Mitchell and Webb, I’d never really registered these guys until they appeared on SoccerAm, then I realised that I had seen them before. They do a series of adverts where one of them is a PC and the other is an Apple Mac, they are also stars of some comedy show called Peep Show which I’ve never seen. This was their first major film venture together and I went to see it with my man DD and his neighbour FF and also it was the only film that was on that would give us enough time afterwards at the lunch buffet…. and a very nice buffet it was too, as for the film…. well the premise of the film was that Mitchell and Webb were a world renowned magical double act and their assistant was the wife of one of them. It transpires that the wife is having an affair with the second part of the double act and they get caught at it. The next time they do their act, it all goes Pete Tong and in an unfortunate accident the wife gets killed. This causes the double act to break up, but due to lack of money coming in they enter a magic competition and become bitter rivals. This is not the kind of film I would readily go and see in the cinema as seeing it on DVD goes detract from the special effects unlike your big blockbusters, but I was quite entertained by the film. The storyline was pretty predicatable to be honest but that didn’t stop me enjoying it, especially as I’d never seen these guys in action as I do like a good comedy. The film did come across as a bit of a modern day version of a Carry On film, which was fine as Carry On film are an institution in my books. At times the acting from the supporting cast was a little wooden, but all in all not a bad film. Would I get this film on DVD, very much doubt it as though I liked it I doubt I’d make a point of seeing it again and I can’t see there being any scope for extras that I’d be likely to want to see. Out of 10 I’d give this film a 6 – 7 not cos it is a bad film, but just that there was nothing in the film that made me think “I’m glad I saw that in the cinema”
NATIONAL TREASURE - Book of Secrets
The Secret is...
To be honest I don't really remember much about the first film in the National Treasure series, which after seeing this film is bound to be a Trilogy, especially if you think about page 47...
From memory I recall the first film was a good old rollercoaster ride of treasure hunt fun and this film was no different
The premise of the film is that the lead character Ben Gates, played by Nicholas "Con Air/Ghostrider" Cage gets informed that one of his ancestors was actually the lead conspirator in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, despite the Gates family story that the said ancestor actually helped the formation of the United States because he had destroyed vital information. The film follows Ben's efforts to clear his ancestor and thus his family name and put it in its rightful place as a National Heroic Name...
The film was two hours and it just flew by, there were no scenes where you'd say that dragged, though being a good old treasure hunt there were many things where you'd say... "Oh come on..." but that's the whole point going to the cinema to escape the real world... right?
Though I enjoyed this film it's not in the class of an Indiana Jones film, and with another Indiana Jones film due out some time soon, this was a great appetite whetter...there were some great quotes and some good comedy moments, I really enjoyed the film, though the film clearly left itself open for the another film and I guess these days any blockbuster film is always going to lean itself towards a trilogy
Would I see this film again, more than likely it was a great ride and as with the first film there is quite a bit of American History thrown in there so worth seeing again for a recap, though obviously artistic licence prevailed. Would I buy this film on DVD, I probably will, but I think I'll wait for the Box Set that will no doubt come out after the third film. I would guess that the extras maybe pretty good as there could hopefully be a few documentaries thrown in there. Out of 10, I'd give this film a good 8/10.

It’s proving very difficult to write a review for this film as I’m still gutted that I was went to see it. It’s not that the film was bad… well actually the whole idea of a film is the ending, so in that case this film was poor and very disappointing, but that said… the getting there was pretty cool, so we’ll talk about that. The premise of the film was Nicholas Cage’s character “Chris Johnson” could see approximately 2 minutes into hos direct future and was using it to earn a crust at a casino show in Vegas. His talents had not gone unnoticed by the FBI when there was sudden national crisis and they sent Julianne Moore’s character to recruit a reluctant Johnson to help them save the day.
The film started pretty fast and essentially stayed at the same pace, with a cracking and far far too short guest appearance by Peter Falk (otherwise known as Detective Colombo) the film was entertaining, but although kinda predictable. Apparently it was based on a novel called “The Golden Man” by Philip K Dick… http://www.pkdickbooks.com/Collections/GoldenMan.html I haven’t read the book so can not tell you it this was a good adaptation. To be honest I really can’t say much more about this film apart from the ending was such a cop out, it was like story written by a small child who didn’t have any idea how to finish their story, so threw in such a cliché ending. I was totally gutted by the ending. Would I buy this film in on DVD… in a word Nope… Out of 10, this film gets a 5 just because the ending destroyed the film that much…
