So back to the South Beach thing, had you been there before and would you recommend it as the place to be?
South Beach was always on my personal agenda but I never quite made it until this summer. Yes one whole month there right on Ocean Drive. The beach a stones throw away. It was bliss...well blistering! I soon learnt late afternoon to evenings were the best time to hit the beach. Mornings were spent with late breakfasts and leisurely shopping. The art deco district is where it's at...gorgeous little boutiques, amazing finds. A word of advice, don't over pack before you arrive or you will end up paying excess baggage at the airport like I did. Bad enough the extra suitcase did not match my hot pink ones; I had to pay a porter to help me repack at the airport thanks to the tight officials there. There was no way I was going to dispose of my new shoes and handbags. Not that they have seen the light of day since my return.
So why South Beach, hasn’t New York City got better shops?
The difference between South Beach shopping and New York is SOBE, as it’s known, is famed for it’s boutiques that have been preserved since the 1930’s and unlike New York’s major department stores Macy’s, Bloomingdales etc SOBE has an array of little shops some ethnic and original rather than mass produced. It doesn’t hope to compete with NY’s fifth avenue and swank, SOBE has a charm and beach style of it’s own. It’s sexy… though I suppose the guys want to know if there is a reason other than shopping...
Yes please do tell….
Well there's decadent nightlife to suit most tastes. If you are not a celebrity and the hotel concierge offers you a VIP pass do not expect the same treatment as you would in England. All the clubs there are run by mafia type security and they make you wait. Needless to say I never waited even with the passes so I gave Mansion, Prive, Opium etc a miss and told the doormen I had been to better clubs in UK. Which I have in my opinion China White was precious...the staff treated me with courtesy and said I was welcome back anytime even without membership...as I had slipped in with a VIP member...oh right...back to South Beach. Well for the musically inclined (and who isn't) the best time of year to go is in British wintertime when they hold their annual music fest. Artists and fans mingle and enjoy a good knees up, some networking and hola perhaps discovery. The cuisine in South Beach is to die for. Chefs are the new celebrity and they are headhunted by the catering industry. I tasted some of the finest Cuban dishes and I think I died and went to heaven. Oh well I was obviously sent back here to write this. Finally, yes I would recommend it. Leave the car behind as taxis abound and you will likely be over the limit with all the choices of cocktails, champagne, mojitos and so forth. However I would only recommend it to the extrovert, the curious, and the brave at heart! It's Fashionista, quirky and a youthful vibe. Expensive too. So be warned.
So was South Beach a month of play and no work, or were you doing something constructive whilst there?
South Beach was a blast! I had always watched the neon lit palm trees on the big screen, films like the fast and furious and I really wanted to be there someday. It was on my list of places in the world I wanted to visit. I combined the adventure with some local research into the music scene there and met some great underground DJ's as the local clubs were a lot more happening than the big advertised ones. I found the house music there was a lot heavier than we hear here in the UK. They turn up the bass so you can really feel the vibe. The people there are crazy, whether fashionably or real, it was hard to tell! I gave out a lot of Andicat biz cards only to discover on my return that there was a misprint on the mobile phone number! Oh well...that's what you get when you are your own secretary, artist, producer, manager and public relations! I did manage to mix a few tracks though so there will be a SOBE version of Andicat's "I Like it Hot!" it's an Andicat classic a bit Like Meatloaf's "Bat Out of Hell!" Just can't kill it! It is rumoured that America The Punch line a forthcoming LA film production will use Andicat's tracks unless she upsets the producer and the director has no sense of humour! Hard to believe as he is also world renowned comedian Eddie Ifft. The docu-film which is for television is about 40 comedians who hit the road and ask people on their world tour what they really think about Americans. Hmmmmn! Sounds pretty narcissistic to me. As if they really care anyway! oops did I hear the Director shout "cut"...if Andicat's songs end up on the cutting floor guess who is NOT going to see that film! No I am not throwing a two year old tantrum though this film has been in the making for at least that long. Look it up on google!
Being an Artist, your own producer, manager and public relations department must be hard work, do you get anytime to actually be an artist and have you got anything new in the pipeline?
I would love to just do the artist thing and leave all the details to management but I have had bad management in the past where nothing really got past control panel. Yes I am done with control freaks now I can be at the helm of my own ship...so where is starboard and what's that curtain doing up as a sail? Okay my sense of humour is as lacking as my self control. Yes I do have something in the pipeline. A South Beach version of I Like it Hot and the release of EP "You Make me Wet". After which I will working on some videos and writing theme music for a play I am co-writing with independent artist Sista Warrior. She is the first female Jewish reggae artist to rival or compliment Matis Yahu. Although her style differs somewhat. She is more roots whereas Matis gave out to commercial when he signed with Sony or some similar big bod.
Must admit I've heard your Like It Hot EP, very good stuff, but tell us, where can people find, buy and/or listen to your music?
Almost at any MP3 digital download outlet including Virgin, Nokia, and Apple ITunes, which seem to be the more popular choices. My EP was for sale in Tower records for a while now it's online at www.cdbaby.com/andicat for the hard copies. Prices vary and are set by the companies concerned. If you just wanna hear some tracks for free log into www.myspace.com/andicat1 where there are blogs, updates, photos and videos, the latest Andicat slideshow wearing South Beach caps, to hide those blonde highlights which the salon added. I bought into the whole sun kissed look. I already had my tan but apparently I needed to wear skyscraper shoes and shorter dresses to show it off. All very well until I fell off my shoes and landed in the arms of a very handsome hunk who took me to dinner, and a view of bayside. Err...what was the question again? Yeah buy it! don't be mean people. Thanks for the plug DJ TC tee hee!
